New Zealand rounded off their tour of the United Kingdom with an eight-wicket thrashing of Scotland in a one-day international here Thursday.In a match that again exposed the gap in class between cricket's elite Test nations and the rest, New Zealand bowled out their hosts for 101 with seamers Jacob Oram (three wickets for 13 runs ) and Grant Elliott (three for 14) doing the bulk of the damage.

The Netherlands won the battle for third place in Group A with an emphatic eight-wicket success over Scotland. Their first victory over Scotland in the three One-Day Internationals the countries have contested and only their second win in 14 World Cup matches. Both teams were aiming to win their first match at the tournament following crushing defeats by champions Australia and top-ranked South Africa. Neil McCallum and Colin Smith shared 38 but fell in two overs to Mark Jonkman. demise, the Dutch openers had 12 overs before the lunch break, usually intended for between innings. It appeared as though they intended to score 137 in that period, with four fours in the opening three overs.

Defending champions Australia start the serious business of the World Cup against South Africa on Saturday with barely any contribution in the tournament so far from their most prolific batsman. Michael Hussey, who averages 79.85 in test cricket and 62.32 in one-day internationals after finally sealing his place in the national side, was out for four against Scotland and two against the Netherlands. He also made a duck against England in a warm-up match in St Vincent and only 15 against Zimbabwe.

South Africa took complete control of their World Cup group A match with Scotland, as the associate side limped to just 186-8 in 50 overs. Skiddy medium-pacer Andrew Hall was South Africa's most successful bowler with figures of 3 for 48 from his 10 overs. Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers began South Africa's run chase with a flurry of boundaries, AB de Villiers raced 62 of just 45 balls and captain Smith hits 91 of just 65 balls. Scotland were without captain Craig Wright, who has gone home for the funeral of a relative. Watson, who played cricket at school with Smith and South Africa's wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, took over. Scotland's previous highest World Cup total was the 181-7 they made in a six-wicket defeat by Australia in the 1999 tournament. Despite being a record it never looked like being enough and so it proved.

Dougie Brown may be one of the older ICC Cricket World Cup debutants at 37 years but the Scotland all-rounder will have plenty of experience to call on in the Caribbean. Back in the late 1990s, Brown, then as now playing county cricket for Warwickshire, was given his chance by England. In only his second one-day international, in December 1997, in Sharjah, the medium-pacer bowled West Indies opener Philo Wallace with the first ball of the match and had Brian Lara, who had been a county colleague at Edgbaston, lbw with the third.
