The Netherlands won the battle for third place in Group A with an emphatic eight-wicket success over Scotland. Their first victory over Scotland in the three One-Day Internationals the countries have contested and only their second win in 14 World Cup matches. Both teams were aiming to win their first match at the tournament following crushing defeats by champions Australia and top-ranked South Africa. Neil McCallum and Colin Smith shared 38 but fell in two overs to Mark Jonkman. demise, the Dutch openers had 12 overs before the lunch break, usually intended for between innings. Michael Hussey, who averages 79.85 in test cricket and 62.32 in one-day internationals after finally sealing his place in the national side, was out for four against Scotland and two against the Netherlands. He also made a duck against England in a warm-up match in St Vincent and only 15 against Zimbabwe.

Australia thrashed the Netherlands by 229 runs in their World Cup Group A match, Brad Hodge fired an explosive maiden one-day century, he hits seven sixes in 123 from 89 balls as 130 came from the final 10 overs in Australia's formidable 358-5. Adam Gilchrist sent Australia on their way after they decided to bat, firing 11 fours in 57 from 64 balls. The Netherlands could never be described as having an express bowling attack, but their variations of a gentle pace caused occasional problems, albeit not for Hodge and Clarke. The target of 359 was always going to be out of Netherlands' reach but their openers showed stomach for a fight.
