[Cricket Match] Bangladesh Claim Series Sweep

Things certainly change quickly in cricket. Not too long back, Bangladesh was languishing in the middle of a dreadful loosing streak following the World Cup in the West Indies. Bangladesh had lost all the 12 one-day internationals they played in a fashion which did not say a lot about their cricketing talent and on the other hand, Ireland (which is incidentally ranked higher than Zimbabwe) was on a high after a relatively successful set of warm-up matches in the Middle-East. Moreover they held the mental edge after having beaten the Asians in their previous encounter.

Shere Bangla National Stadium saw its home team confirming a much wanted win in the international circuit. They were totally outplayed in the tough series against South Africa. On other hand, Ireland showed a good performance in the ICC Intercontinental Cup. So this match was supposed to be a hard one because the home-advantage goes to Bangladesh and form favors the visitors. But it never happened as the guests could not even compete.
Full Scorecard | Match Summary

Ireland coach Adrian Birrell said his World Cup rookies would be looking chiefly to avoid an annihilation by world champions Australia in their Super Eights match on Friday. Australia beat second-tier teams Scotland and the Netherlands by the huge margins of 203 and 229 runs in the group stage and Birrell knows his men need to be right on their games to avoid a similar mauling.

New Zealand rout Ireland by 129 runs

Providence Stadium, Guyana, New Zealand asked Ireland skipper T Johnston to field first after wining the toss. New Zealand had replaced the injured Michael Mason with Jeetan Patel while Ireland brought in K O'Brien and P Gillespie in place of A Botha and P Mooney. New Zealand openers started their innings in a respectable manner. Boyd Rankin and D Smith each took a wicket to interrupt the decent start of New Zealand innings. Stephen Fleming (11) sliced Rankin to W Porterfield at point and Hamish Marshall (16) lobbed to extra cover, P Fulton on the other end tried hard and reached his half-century but falls short of a second one-day century. Hamish Marshall, Scott Styris, Craig McMillan and Oram had all got in and got out cheaply, Ireland bowlers shown some impressive performance and demolished New Zealand's hope of mammoth target. Some late show by B McCullum and J Franklin boosted the New Zealand innings to a comparative total.

In reply, Shane Bond took just six balls to make an impact in Guyana, removing opener Jeremy Bray for one to leave Ireland 5-1 off two overs, chasing 264 to win. Bond struck once again and Ireland lost second opener W Porterfield when score was only 22 off 7.2 overs. Brien brothers shown some resistance to New Zealand and shared a 75 run partnership to lead Ireland's recovery before the K O'Brien (49) ran out in 29th over. Irish batsmen seemed unsure how to chase the target and were returning to pavilion quickly one after another. New Zealand spinners D Vettori and Patel bowl superbly today and shared 6 wickets together, Vettori took four and Patel took two wickets to end the Ireland innings.

The match between South Africa and Ireland was disrupted number of times at Providence Stadium, Guyana due to rain. South African skipper won the toss and decided to field first. His decision was in the face of rain as it was thought that the bowlers might be able to take advantage of any early movement with moisture in the pitch and also D/L method in skipper's mind. S Pollok start the South African attack and done early destruction by taking both openers J Bray in his second over and W Porterfield in his seventh over when score was only 31 from 12.3 overs. E Morgon (28), N O'Brien (25) and A White (30) attempted very hard to up their run rate in the rain-reduced 35 overs a side match but they are failed after a good start. Paul Mooney comes in for his World Cup debut - and departs for a golden duck after gloving Langeveldt to Boucher down the leg side. The Ireland's hopes of posting a big total and then upset South African failed due to fall of wickets at regular intervals and rain.

Ireland bowling attack commenced with full of excitement as Rankin took A de Villiers in his first over when score was only one run but after that South Africa recovered from the early loss and looked comfortable chasing 160 to beat Ireland. Man in form Smith (41) missed his half century first time in this world cup as Ireland skipper Trent Johnston took a stunning return catch. When Rankin brought back to attack once again he had tried to generate some more excitement in the middle by taking H Gibbs (6) in his sixth over but Kallis was adamant at one end and made 66 runs form 86 balls, A Prince also supported Kallis and scored quick 47 runs from 44 balls.

South Africa play Ireland on Tuesday in Guyana in a game where only one result seems possible - a crushing South African win. Ireland have played the tournament so far with passion and heart but it's unlikely that they will be able to match the superior skills of Graeme Smith's men. For this South African team, the buzz word has always been professionalism. Preparations don't change much if they are playing the might of Australia or in this case the minnows of Ireland.

England lose both openers Ed Joyce (1) and Vaughan (6) early on after choosing to bat first in the Super 8 encounter with Ireland in Guyana. The England captain, who chose an unchanged side, hit one four but edged gently to keeper Niall O'Brien.
